With Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, Microsoft was able to move away from the limitations of a 32-bit operating system with the move to a 64-bit operating system using Windows Server 2003 x 64 platforms. This allowed for significant increases in available memory resources for the application, allowing memory to scale well beyond the 4 GB available to Exchange 2003; designers could now cache greater portions of the Exchange database(s) in memory. By increasing database cache, larger portions of the user’s mailbox can now be cached reducing the I/O demands on disk.

This paper describes a best practice process for consolidating servers and storage in a multiserver Microsoft® Exchange 2000 Server environment by concurrently migrating to a single server Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 environment on a storage area network (SAN). The methodology is commonly referred to as the “move mailbox” method. It includes installing a new Exchange 2003 server into an existing Exchange 2000 Administrative Group, using the Exchange 2003 move mailbox wizard to move the user mailboxes from the source Exchange 2000 server to the target Exchange 2003 server, and decommissioning the old servers.

This paper discusses migrating from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 and from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003. Key tasks that need to be done in both cases are discussed. The focus for Exchange 2003 deployment is to make things simpler and you can see how the changes in the installation process (with regard to permission etc.) facilitate this. If you've been familiar with Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 migration then there is very little that's new with Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 migratoin. The same principles and tools are used today as yesterday.

The HP Storage Planning Calculator for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 addresses one of the most critical areas of Exchange server design: performance and capacity planning for the storage subsystem. As with previous versions of Exchange, storage planning remains a key element in achieving application scalability and availability with Exchange 2007. However, with complexities such as multiple storage groups and databases, growing mailbox sizes and shrinking backup windows, the sizing process is very critical. This tool is designed to provide guidelines for disk, storage controller and enclosure planning for successful Exchange Server 2007 deployments.
