Thin provisioning with space reclamation
Thin Provisioning creates virtual disk drives—LUNs, or Logical Units—that can appear to be larger than their actual physical capacities. If a LUN needs more storage, the array can increase the amount of physical space it uses, without changing the size presented to the application. This 'just-enough' and 'just-in-time' storage allocation results in huge savings from both a capital and an operational perspective. Occasionally, customers opt out of using a filesystem because they are concerned about performance degradation. For example, users of large databases sometimes feel they must choose either manageability or performance, sacrificing one for other. 5.0.1 Base-VxFS and OnlineJFS solve the trade-off problem for a variety of environments by delivering significant performance improvements, giving customers the ability to have both performance and manageability. Direct I/O is available through Base-VxFS 5.0.1.

• Base-VxFS 5.0.1 is a free download from HP Software Depot and is included in the HP-UX 11i v3 Base Operating Environment.
• OnlineJFS 5.0.1 (VxFS Full) requires independent media and a codeword, which is available to all HP-UX 11i v3 HA-OE, VSE-OE, and DC-OE customers. OnlineJFS is also available to be purchased standalone for BOE customers for a separate license cost.
• For both Base-VxFS and OnlineJFS, if you are a Software Update Manager (SUM) customer enjoying the benefits of HP support, you will receive an email notification about the new version. Non-SUM customers with support will receive a hard copy notification.

How it works

Increase confidence by securing volume-level system configuration before installing new software.
LVM has introduced read and write-capable snapshots at the volume manager level. Snapshots allow for an actual picture to be taken of a system configuration, and are useful for backups. The ability to take snapshots at the volume level also gives administrators confidence that their system configuration can be saved when any configuration changes are made, such as when installing new applications or experimenting with any new system configuration. Decrease the amount of time system administrators spend on routine tasks.
The LVMove command for LVM allows for a reduction in time and steps required to move a logical volume within a volume group. LVMove takes the VGMove function a step further by automating the previously manual step of increasing the size of the volume group. What was previously three steps:

1. Extend vg
2. Use PVMove to move data from source to destination
3. Delete source data

is now two steps:

1. Simply utilize LVMove command to move source data
2. Delete source data

Take advantage of enhancements in scalability, manageability, availability, and ease migration
LVM Layout 2 (L2) has increased scalability, manageability, high-availability (for SLVM), and mobility features. For example, the maximum number of volume groups supported for LVM L1 was 256, while L2 supports up to 2048. The maximum number of physical volumes has increased to 2048 on L2 from 255 on L1. The maximum physical extents have increased from 64K to 16 million. In order to take advantage of the latest LVM enhancements, you need to move to L2, and until now, you had to boot with 1.0 and could only use 2.0 as data disks.
